Rivendell SAM HILLBORNE

FOR ALL ROADS— paved, dirt, or gravel; and the kinds of fire trails a Conestoga wagon could negotiate, but not the kind that would require a jackass. If you're skilled and have good judgement and fattish knobby tires, you can ride the SAM where you shouldn't. Stick with what it's designed for: all the above, and ROAD TOURING, ROAD SHOPPING, and ROAD COMMUTING.

The Sam is a versatile road and light trail bike.

ALL WEATHER: Easily fendered. Can the "gravel bike" you're considering fit fenders? How about racks?

Everything that makes it a great touring bike also makes it a great commuter, camper or all-rounder. The Sam is equally a great bike for a carrying food and camping gear and clothing around.

FRAME: Our-designed SILVER (brand) CrMo tubing in dimensions we see fit. Geometry is ours alone, also. It rides like all Rivendells. Good with drop bars or uprights. Fits tires up to 45 with fenders, 48 without.

Frame Specification:

  • 650b wheels in size 48cm and 51cm
  • 700c wheels in sizes 54cm and up
  • V-brake or cantilever
  • 135mm rear spacing
  • 27.2 seatpost
  • 1" threaded fork - FSA Duron headset included
  • kickstand plate
  • Geometry chart here.

Recommended PBHs and STANDOVER HEIGHTS at mid-top tube with 45mm tire:

-48cm: 75cm standover | 76.5 to 79cm PBHs

-51cm: 78.5cm standover | 79 to 83cm PBHs

-54cm: 82cm standover | 83 to 86cm PBHs

-57cm: 85cm standover | 86 to 89cm PBHs

-60cm: 88cm standover | 89 to ?cm PBHs

BRAKES: V-brakes (standard or mini) or cantilevers. We can advise.
I
f you will use Cantis, be sure to buy front and rear cable hangers (not included).

BRAZE-ONS: A-plenty. Easy to mount racks, fenders. (Well, as easy as they ever are. They're usually a little fussy, but that's not the frame's fault.)

LOAD CAPACITY: It depends on your weight, the road surface, the tire volume, air pressure, and your riding style. Basically, a 185lb rider can probably tote 35 to 40lbs on road rides. It's not a full-on touring bikes, but it's not a wimp, either.

HANDLEBAR STYLE: Drops, Albastache, or any upright. Use a short stem with drops or Albastache--maybe 5 to 7cm. With Albatross, up to 10cm, and with Billie or Tosco, 11 or 12cm.

TIRE RECOMMENDATIONS—

for 90 percent road: 700c: Any Shikoro, 38mm or 42mm.  There are lots, but these are the ones we sell.

650B: Gravel King 38mm or 45mm. Even though it's a "Gravel King," the tread is more suited to pavement.

for 50-50 pavement and dirt: Cazadero 43mm

RIDER WEIGHT LIMIT?: It's hard to say, it depends so much on what else you're carrying, the surface you're on, the tire volume and pressure...lots of things that are just hard to pin down. But we'll say...220lb. But if you weigh that, don't also load the bike up with touring gear. And consider an Appaloosa, which fits bigger tires and has a stouter fork.

LOOKS GOOD TO US:

The Sam Hillborne is a classically styled frame with sweated-over graphics. The frame joints are lugged, the fork has a crown, and they're all our own designed investment castings, starting from rocks, which are made into metal, and shaped with precision and beauty by a process developed in China ten thousand years ago.

We pay attention to even the most superficial details: The stress-relief hole on the back of the seat lug is painted cream. The wings on the fork crown, too. The seat tube and down tube decals are in exactly the right spot, something that always used to happen before the 21st century came around and people with no taste took over. The letters are filled with cream, edged in black, and "halo'd" in gold, for an easy-on-the-eye transition to the paint color. The fork's curved and tapered blades have wild and crazy, beautiful cream-edged dropouts. The bottom bracket shell is designed to minimize stress, with curves where other shells have points; and with windows to aid the brazer. Age, scrapes, grime, and other signs of use just make it look better.

Good, but not great
Color: White
I work from home, so having a really comfortable chair that supports my back and provides me a nice place to sit for 8 hours is really important to me. I ordered this chair in March 2023 and was really happy with it at first. Sleek, easy to put together, and comfortable. I then had an issue with it because after I sat on it while wearing leggings, the entire seat and armrests turned black from the fabric. No other furniture I own turns black from my leggings. I reached out to the seller and they were kind enough to provide me a replacement for the seat and the two armrests at no charge. I went through the whole summer and didn't wear leggings. However, I am now in Oct 2023 and wearing leggings again. The chair seat and armrests are black again, but there is also a lot of wear to the chair in general. I understand I sit in it a lot, but the seat lost its comfort factor. Additionally, I lean on the left armrest a lot and it shows - there is a large indent on it. The fake leather material is just not for me and the chair no longer looks attractive. I wish it lasted longer considering how much I paid for it.

Worth Every Penny
Color: Black
Bought this chair Aug 2023 and as i come up on 3 years with this chair i can say i absolutely love this chair. i bought this chair when i was having very bad back pain and assuming my old chair was to small i decided to purchase it. Zero complaints about this chair at all, no rips, cuts or broken parts. The chair does have some cracking but that's because I'm fat so its a lot for the chair to hold on a daily bases. I give this chair a lot of props for removing my back pain considering my back pain was due to a popped gallbladder that was infected.. If you are reading reviews and looking for a good chair that's worth the money just get this. Its easy to assemble & it has great stability AND most importantly it holds the weight of myself.. I'm built like a butter ball turkey..

1 year review from a teleworker
Color: Grey
I purchased the Homall Office Chair in March of 2022, with high expectations of comfort and functionality. I liked how the chair looked, its price point, and it received positive reviews. Unfortunately, my experience with this chair has been underwhelming, to say the least. Several issues, ranging from poor quality to difficult assembly, have left me deeply dissatisfied with my purchase. Let's start with the assembly process, which was an absolute nightmare. The instructions provided were not terrible, but not great either. It took me significantly longer than anticipated to assemble this chair, and I consider myself fairly handy. If you're not well-versed in putting together furniture, you may find yourself extremely frustrated. Another significant issue I encountered was with the chair's hydraulic cylinder. It has already started failing, causing the chair to slowly sink, regardless of the adjustment settings. This rendered the height adjustment feature useless and made for an uncomfortable seating position. I expected a durable and reliable chair, but sadly, this was not the case. The armrests were also a major disappointment. They started to deform and indent where my elbows and arms sit. The rest of the chair is fine. I can sit it in all day, so that is a positive. I mainly lean a bit forward and don't have time to lounge backward. On top of all these issues, the Homall Office Chair proved to be quite noisy. Whenever I shifted my weight or made any slight movements, the chair emitted creaking and squeaking sounds. Not only was it an annoyance, but it also disrupted my concentration while working and is embarrassing on conference calls. Having such a distracting and low-quality chair in a professional environment is disappointing. If I read this review I would have a couple of questions about the reviewer. I am 6'3" but well below the recommended weight. I review plans and specs as part of my job, so I am good with instructions. My hobby is woodworking which requires skill and a calm demeanor. Yes, I did retighten any connectors that became loose through normal wear and tear. I should have spent more money on a quality chair since I am now looking to purchase a different chair 1 year later. I would advise others to take that into consideration. Spend a little more and keep less junk out of our landfills.

High Quality Rolling Chair
Color: Black/Silver
My son LOVES this desk chair. He has a drafting table to draw and do schoolwork on, and this provides him a comfortable chair to work in. It is sturdy and easy to clean. It does not fold, but it does roll easily. It was VERY EASY to put together. We were also pleased with the price. He will be able to use it for years to come.

The Greatest Chair I've Ever Sat In
Color: Black/Silver, Color: Black/Silver
When I was a boy, my first office chair that I used for PC and laptop work growing up was this chair. This was back before 2010 so it likely wasn't under the Amazon Basics brand but it was the exact same chair design. I've used that chair my entire life really and only had to buy this chair as a replacement as the leather started peeling significantly on my old chair after over 20 years of use. Even though the leather was heavily peeled, my old chair was still extremely comfortable and I would've kept on using it had I not gotten annoyed with having to pick up leather bits and pieces everyday from the peeling. I bought this chair as a replacement and the comfort is still as I remembered. No lower back pain, no butt numbness, no arm numbness, truly such a masterpiece of a chair where it lets you focus on the task at hand instead of focusing on the chair. Before I rebought this chair, I've bought & tried the Secretlab Titan Evo Nanogen, Furmax executive office chair, Neo executive office chair, RS high back gaming chair w/ flip-up armrests, Bestfair high-back office chair, FDW executive office chair, Herman Miller Aeron, and OFIKA executive office chair in search of a potential "upgrade" - every single one of these other chairs was inferior to the Amazon Basics high back office chair in one way or the other. The only thing I will note is that the pneumatic gas cylinder of the Amazon Basics office chair seems to be different from my original chair - it goes higher and has a higher minimum seat height. If you would like to perfectly replicate the original lower seat depth you will have to buy the S6124 extra short office chair gas lift cylinder from ChairPartsOnline - my only nitpick about such a phenomenal chair. In my attached picture I have the Amazon Basics chair w/ S6124 gas cylinder on the right next to the Furmax high-back office chair which although inferior is what I consider to be the 2nd best chair if for some reason you cannot get the Amazon Basics high-back office chair. To sum it up - I HIGHLY RECOMMEND THIS CHAIR!!!
